Whether you're already in employment or looking to start your career, this degree apprenticeship can help you develop your management skills, boost your job prospects and earn a degree whilst working full time.

The Chartered Manager degree apprenticeship scheme was developed by the Government, business leaders, universities and the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) in response to a critical shortage of qualified managers. It is a nationally recognised qualification. The Government or your employer pay your tuition fees – it doesn’t cost you anything other than hard work.

This 3-year degree apprenticeship is suitable for anyone over 18, whether you've already established your career and want to consolidate your work experience with management education, or you’ve just finished college and are taking your first step into professional employment.

You'll learn professional management and leadership principles and develop your skills in areas such as business accounting, marketing, managing and leading a team and business strategy. You'll get to apply the skills you learn on the degree to your job and share your new knowledge with colleagues, contributing to the success of your employer.

At the end of the course, you'll have a BA (Hons) Business Leadership and Management degree and full level 6 apprenticeship certification. Every successful apprentice is granted Chartered Manager status without additional assessment, as the requirements are built into the end point assessment. You'll also be expected to receive a Chartered Management Institute (CMI) level 5 qualification. 

To do this degree, you need to have full support from your current employer, or you can apply to work for an employer looking to recruit degree apprentices.

How you study will depend on your employer. You might study completely online, or do a combination of distance learning and campus-based learning.

When I left college, I found it quite difficult to merge a part-time role with a full-time college course. An apprenticeship for me was a great way to earn whilst I learn and still have a social life.

The way that the apprenticeship worked, I was at work 4 days a week with 1 day at university. The staff at Hampshire Chamber of Commerce have been very supportive in giving me some time to complete coursework and help me to the best of their ability. I feel like I've become a lot more confident and able to speak in front of crowds more. I've been able to sort of manage my time and lots of different skills personally that I've picked up along the way, and it's really helped me in my professional development.

  • All applicants to the Degree Apprenticeship courses must have an acceptable Level 2 qualification in English and Mathematics. Acceptable qualifications include GCSE with grade C/4 or above and Functional Skills with Pass - please note that we are not able to accept all kinds of Level 2 qualifications, so if you are unsure whether you have a suitable qualification please get in touch. If you do not have an acceptable qualification you will be required to take an additional assessment during the application process.

All applicants will be required to complete a Skills Gap Analysis before completing an application form.

All applicants will be invited to attend an academic interview and may be asked to submit a portfolio of work or undertake additional assessment.

We look at more than just your grades

While we consider your grades when making an offer, we also carefully look at your circumstances and other factors to assess your potential. These include whether you live and work in the region and your personal and family circumstances which we assess using established data.

You and your employer

When you begin studying for your degree apprenticeship:

  • You need to be 18 or over
  • You should be able to satisfy government requirements on residency: 
    • you must be a citizen or have the right to live in the UK/EEA
    • you must have been a resident in the UK/EEA (not the Channel Islands or Isle of Man) for a minimum of 3 years
    • you must not need a Student Route visa, and must not have been on a Student Route visa within the past 3 years
  • You need to have the right to work in the UK, and to spend at least 50% of your working hours in England
  • Your job should meet the requirements of the apprenticeship standard relevant to this degree – we can advise you and your employer on this
  • Your employer needs to have registered an apprentice service account – we can help your employer with this if needed

Each module on this course is worth a certain number of credits.

In each year, you need to study modules worth a total of 120 credits. For example, four modules worth 20 credits and one module worth 40 credits.

What you'll study

Core modules

You'll explore influential concepts and contemporary issues, and analyse how culture, change initiatives and workplace relationships interact to shape team and company outcomes either positively or negatively. With reflective assessments tailored to consolidating your knowledge within your own professional context, you'll boost your abilities to diagnose situations and responsibly tailor approaches. Become an informed, ethical and versatile manager ready to get the best from a diverse workforce.

From sharpening your analytical abilities to practicing influential communication tailored to diverse stakeholders, you'll reflect meaningfully on your personal strengths and areas for development before creating an action plan to reach the next level of your career. With one-to-one guidance that focuses on on identifying and reaching your potential through good judgment and lifelong learning, you'll finish this module as an agile professional ready to demonstrate your character when facing modern workplace complexities.

Learners will evaluate the impact of the internal environment when managing and leading by investigating the purpose of mission/values, organisational structure and culture. This module addresses the ºÚÁÏÈë¿Ú Hallmark (1,7,8, 9) and (7) (8) assessed on leadership and to support the success of others. This module maps to the Chartered Manager Standards most strongly leading people.

This module will provide an introduction to the role of the Operations Management function in controlling the associated resources within service and manufacturing based organisations. Apprentices will learn how Operations creates `Value¿ through the exploration, design and delivery of a number of topics, and how Operations Managers traverse through the tasks issues and decisions regarding areas including process and layout design, capacity and resource management, supply chain management, inventory management, lean, quality management, project management, operations improvement, and the sustainability of operations. Hallmarks that are assessed during this module are 1 and 6 by critical reflecting on the principles of business operations and systems management and sustainability, 5 by using online tools, and 8 by completion of a formal report. The module is strongly aligned with Chartered Manager Standards, especially Organisational Performance.

You'll discover techniques to construct and adapt robust plans that navigate organisational dynamics and stakeholder interests. Refine your people skills as you analyse team structures and mitigate risks, and compare approaches to transform objectives into realities. 

This module prepares you to become an adept project manager ready to deliver projects amid complexity.

By revisiting and building on internal factors that influence the business that you work in (Bus Conf 2) and review the contribution made through your own roles (PSD 1). This learning is extended further by exploring ways in which business respond to changes in their economic, social and technological environment using models and frameworks so that an evidenced picture is built. The module addresses the Hallmarks 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10,11. The module through the ePortfolio assessment (5), (8) encourages the apprentice to investigate their own working environment and where their career path fits (10,11).

Core modules

Hallmarks that are assessed during this module are 1, 2 and 3 by critical reflecting on the principles of project finaicial management, synthesise new and existing knowledge to generate ideas and develop solutions by thinking independently, analytically and creatively, and engaging with new areas of investigation within and across discipline boundaries. Hallmarks also assessed are 8 by completion of a formal report and 5 with the use of various software packages.

In focusing on a specific work based problem the apprentice can apply a range of theoretical and conceptual frameworks that can be applied in to the workplace. Hallmarks that are assessed during this module are 1 by critical reflecting on the principles of project management and 8 by completion of a option paper, and 2 , 3 and 10 by thinking independently, analytically and creatively, engaging with new areas of investigation responding positively to new situations by being aware, flexible, adaptable and realistic in their expectations. This module maps to the Chartered Manager Standards - project management and developing collborative relationships.

You'll explore techniques for workforce planning, recruiting, selecting, and developing motivated individuals and teams. You'll learn to apply these approaches to ensure that your team works legally and safely to achieve high performance. During this module you'll work in a team, applying your knowledge to a case study to demonstrate your understanding. Various activities will help you create your own individual report and make recommendations to workplace problems. This experience enhances communication, critical thinking and management skills that align with Chartered Management Standards.

Apprentices will be provided with opportunities to analyse the theoretical perspectives covered in the module in relation to the practical implementations of digital technologies within their own and other organisations. Where practicable, site visits and guest lecturers will be included in the module schedule to improve the knowledge, skills and learning of the apprentices. The Hallmarks that are assessed by online test and poster (8) are (1) critical and reflective approach to digital technology in their own workplace, (3) via the infographics, (5) as the module introduces much discussion regarding new technology and finally their needs to be a consideration of corporate social responsibility (6).

It begins with questions about the purpose of organisations of all types, from transnational corporations to SMEs, social enterprises and not for profit. It then progresses to consider how they are led and governed. The module explores a range of concepts including stakeholder theory, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and ethical decision making, and then investigates issues of practical application such as: stakeholder management, strategic CSR and social accounting. Also, Hallmarks 1, 2, and 6 are assessed by demonstrating the ability to synthesise new and existing knowledge to generate ethical ideas with a sense of responsibility allied to a commitment to ethical practice that benefit to the economy and society.

Specifically it will cover developing marketing and sales strategies including the analysis, segmentation and understanding of customers required to ensure that these strategies are successful. The module will also provide an appreciation of the importance of sustainability and ethical decision making in today's global and digital environment. The UoP Graduate Hallmarks of 'have a critical and reflective knowledge and understanding of their subject, with both the ability and readiness to question its principles, practices and boundaries and be intellectually curious, embrace challenges and seize opportunities for development' will be included in this module. The module is part of the CMDA course which is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute.

Core modules

In collaboration with your employer, you’ll scope out an assignment aligned to your business needs before planning and implementing it from beginning-to-end. With assessments that focus on applying project management concepts contextually, you’ll consolidate your analytical abilities while demonstrating skills from communication to resilience under pressure. When you complete this module you'll have evidence of creating meaningful organisational change through initiative and drive.

Hallmarks that are assessed during this module are 1 and 2 by critical reflecting on the principles of management & leadership whilst thinking independently, analytically and creatively, with new areas of investigation within and across discipline boundaries, and 8 by completion of a formal report. Also Hallmarks 3 and 4 are assessed by demonstrating the ability to synthesise new and existing knowledge and be intellectually curious, embracing challenges and seizing opportunities for development.

Exploring pivotal concepts from environmental scanning to evaluating options for growth or turnaround, you’ll learn how to align internal capabilities with external realities for resilient futures. Tackling complex challenges faced by real global companies, you’ll recommend evidence-based paths to manage change and unlock potential responsibly. This module will get you ready to set ambitious direction and mobilise people to deliver.

By analysing traditional and contemporary models, you’ll evaluate complex debates around topics like management versus leadership. You'll undertake activities tailored to boosting self-awareness and creating development roadmaps, and discover how to empower teams through clear vision, integrity and sound judgment. You'll finish this module ready to enable positive change.

This unit deals with such an approach by studying policy formation, business processes, customer service, employee training, marketing, system applications and information management. An effective CRM can reinforce sustainability and profitability of a business, hence this unit empowers students to focus upon the business strategy associated with CRM to reflect upon specific situations. This unit also provides the opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience using an available commercial CRM software package to support business intelligence generated from CRM initiatives in support of marketing strategies, customer segmentation, customer retention measures and product offerings.

We use the best and most current research and professional practice alongside feedback from our students to make sure course content is relevant to your future career or further studies.

Therefore, some course content may change over time to reflect changes in the discipline or industry. If a module doesn't run, we'll let you know as soon as possible and help you choose an alternative module.

How you'll spend your time

How you study for your degree will depend on your employer. You'll likely attend the University on day release for 1 day every other week during term time. You'll do follow-up work by yourself when away from the University with support from our Virtual Learning Environment: Moodle.

Occasionally, we run customised versions of the course with specific employers, which aren't available to all applicants. This could involve study via distance learning with the support of Moodle or a combination of online study with block release (4-day periods of intense study on campus).

Supporting you

Types of support

You'll have help from a team of study support tutors. Based within the Faculty of Business and Law, these tutors are familiar with the specific requirements your assignments and work closely with faculty academics. This means they can give you focused support with the specific study skills you need to be successful on your course – face-to-face, by phone and email, and by video call.

They can help with:

  • Academic writing (for example, essays, reports, dissertations, projects and literature reviews)
  • Reflective writing skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Delivering presentations (including observing and filming presentations)
  • Understanding and using assignment feedback
  • Managing your time and workload
  • Revision and exam techniques

If you're a mature student returning to study, specialist support is available.

During term time, Faculty Academic Skills Tutors (AST) are available for bookable 1-to-1 sessions, small group sessions and online sessions. These sessions are tailored to your needs.

As an Affiliate Member of the CMI, you will have access to Management Direct – CMI’s on-line resource tool. This is packed with resources and support such as leader videos, interactive scenarios, published articles, e-journals and summaries on key business initiatives.

Course costs and funding

Tuition fees

The payment of the course fee is shared between the Government and some employers, meaning no cost to you as the degree apprentice. Total tuition fees are £22,000 paid over 3 years.

These course-related costs aren’t included in the tuition fees. So you’ll need to budget for them when you plan your spending.

Our accommodation section show your accommodation options and highlight how much it costs to live in ºÚÁÏÈë¿Ú.

You’ll study up to 6 modules a year. You may have to read several recommended books or textbooks for each module.

You can borrow most of these from the Library. If you buy these, they may cost up to £60 each.

We recommend that you budget £75 a year for photocopying, memory sticks, DVDs and CDs, printing charges, binding and specialist printing.

 

If your final year includes a major project, there could be cost for transport or accommodation related to your research activities. The amount will depend on the project you choose.
