Tell us about your opinions on societal issues
Participants will report about an opinion that they truthfully or falsely believe in.
Study Description
The study will involve participants either lying or telling the truth in an interview about their opinion on a societal issue. The interview will be done remotely via Zoom.
Prior to the interview, participants will complete:
- opinions questionnaire (measuring opinions about societal issues);
- pre-interview questionnaire (measuring background characteristics, motivation and preparation);
- a post-interview questionnaire (measuring perceptions of the interviewer)
- a detailed debrief will be the final stage of the study.
Participants do not need to prepare anything for this study.
What will participants be doing?
Participants will be asked to tell the truth or to lie in an interview about their opinion on a debated topic. Participants will also complete questionnaires before and after the interview.
Duration
Approximately 45 minutes.

Participant characteristics:
- participants should have a good grasp of English (the interview will be conducted in English).
- staff, students and the general public.
- any gender.
- aged 18+
Reward
Participants will receive £15 for taking part. Participants deemed to be convincing during the interview will be entered into a draw to win a monetary prize worth £50, £100 or £150.
Location
The study will be conducted online via Zoom. The researcher will send participants the Zoom link.
