Summary

Alessia Tranchese is Associate Professor in Language, Feminism & Digital Media. Her research explores how language and media shape understandings of gender, sexuality, and violence, with a particular focus on the representation of violence against women in both mainstream and digital contexts.

Her current work examines pornography, misogyny, and sex education, analysing how violence is represented, discussed, and normalised on online platforms. Her combines corpus linguistics with innovative digital methods, including AI-based image and text analysis, to investigate the intersections of language, technology, and gendered violence.

She is the author of a book on #MeToo and media representations of sexual violence, and her broader body of work includes investigations of the online sex industry and of online misogynistic groups like incels.

Beyond academia, Alessia has collaborated with organisations and think tanks such as The Zero Tolerance Charitable Trust, Against Violence and Abuse (AVA), the West London Rape Crisis Centre, DEMOS, and Full Fact.
